FAQ

Secret Solstice is an Icelandic music festival that‘s being held for the first time on the 20th-22nd of June 2014. The festival features over a hundred artists both local and international from a various array of genres. It showcases both established artists as well as exciting up-and-coming talent over the course of three days in the 24 hour midnight sun during the summer solstice. It‘s themed after the Norse religion and mythology of old. It‘s set to deliver a unique party atmosphere filled with great entertainment.
Because of how close Iceland is situated to the arctic circle, the nation gets the full on effect of seasonal changes on a unique scale. During the summer we get long, sunny days and, as expected, winter comes with complete darkness.
The summer solstice was a time of bounty in the lives of the Nordic nations and a cause for celebration. The Norse mythology and religion commonly known as the Asatru is deeply rooted natural symbolism.
The festival is set in Icelands capital city Reykjavík more specifically in the Laugardalur recreational area. Laugardalur translates to Hot Spring Valley and in the past the citizens of Reykjavík used to bathe and do their laundry in the geo-thermal hot spot. Some of the fields and venues in Laugardalur play host to some of Icelands major sporting events as well as some major cultural events. Besides that there is a huge swimming pool in the area, camping ground, a botanical garden and a theme park/ petting zoo.
Icelandic weather can be very temperamental so you should bring clothes for most situations. Still this time of year tends to pretty mild so you should be fine with light protective clothing. Just pay attention to the forecast and consider what you want to do during your stay.
The festival takes place from the 20th-22nd of June 2014 over summer solstice. During that period Iceland has 24-hour sunlight which definitely provides a very unique atmosphere for the festival.
A very diverse selection of music from both local and international, established and up-and-coming talent.
Too many to mention but a lot of amazing music. The full lineup will be posted soon but you can check out already booked acts the Line-Up section.
As long as you‘re 18 years old tickets are available online in our Tickets/Book section. If you're under 18 years of age you can access the site if accompanied by a guardian.
The festival promoters are willing to consider anyone for a spot to play at the festival. You can send us requests here.
On site camping is available on two different camping grounds and can be booked in our Tickets/Book section. On site there is a varied selection of food vendors, various merchants and easy access to showers (which is quite rare for festivals).
There are many hotels and hostels of varying quality depending on what you are after around the area and a bit further off (Reykjavik is a pretty small city so you can pretty much stay anywhere and still be close). You can take a closer look at accommodation possibilities in our tickets/book section. In the area surrounding Laugardalur there is also a pretty wide selection of restaurants and if you can be bothered you can visit the downtown area, which is only about 10-15 minutes away, and sample the vivid restaurant scene in that area. Don‘t worry about having to subject yourself to the punishment of our famous local culinary practices (traditional Icelandic foods like sheep balls and rotten shark) we have a pretty varied selection of international foods. Besides showering on site you have the option of visiting the Laugardalslaug, a communal swimming pool in the area, where you can shower, go for a swim or just lounge around the hot tubs, steam bath or sauna.
Iceland uses it‘s own currency called krónur which you can exchange most foreign currencies for at all local banks or the foreign exchange at Keflavik airport. You can actually get quite a bang for your buck as Iceland really isn‘t that expensive anymore.
You can book flights through our travel partner WOW air in our Tickets/Book section.

NEWS

>>> THANK YOU ALL for SECRET SOLSTICE 2014! <<<

It's taken over nine months in planning, over thirty full-time staff and interns, hundreds of festival volunteers, the people of Reykjavík, dozens of local companies, many corporate partners and over 150+ incredible Icelandic and international acts, but we can now happily say...

SECRET SOLSTICE 2014 WAS A SUCCESS!

We had Icelandic and foreign guests turn out in force this weekend from more than 30 nations. To all of our festival guests, we hope you had a blast. We've already had reviews pouring in over Twitter and other social media about how much fun you've all had -- to us, that makes all the work we put in completely worth it.

To many of you, Secret Solstice may have just been an amazing event with some beautiful yellow branding, though it was so much more. And for it to happen, there were so many people involved who gave their time to make it a reality.

We're going to try and keep this short, though we have a lot of people to thank...

To our corporate sponsors and partners, including WOW Air, Icelandic Glacial Water, 365 Media, The Warehouse Project, 66ºNorth, Budget, Reyka Vodka, Carlsberg, Domino's, Eimskip, NTC, Skemmtilegt, Byko, World Class Gym and anyone else involved, we couldn't have done this without your support. Your time, resources and assistance in helping to spread our festival's aim to the world means so much to all of us.

To the foreign and local media that covered the lead-up to the event and who will be sharing post-event coverage, we'd like to thank you for taking your time to help get Secret Solstice out to the world.

To the 300+ volunteers who gave their time to us, you are some of the most important people involved. This event literally would not have taken place without you.

To all the artists who shared a stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it's your music people came to see. Without any one of you wanting to be a part of Secret Solstice, we wouldn't have made this event a reality.

To the members of the festival team who have come from the UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, France, Canada or anywhere else we might be forgetting, we thank you for being a part of something so special here in Iceland.

And finally... to the people of Iceland who supported us all the way, we thank you.

Over the coming weeks we'll be sharing with you recap videos from our talented content teams and a host of photos from the local and international media who attended, so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Finally, from the festival directors, we want to give one more huge thanks to everyone who made Secret Solstice 2014 a reality. We couldn't have done this without the support of any one of the thousands of people who were involved in this massive project.

We can't wait to see all of you again...
